At University of Viçosa Brazil(UFV), Prof Otto Anderson has selected 10 good varieties of Jaboticaba. And they are famously known as Otto Anderson collection. We have a photo in this listing of the 10 varieties. This specie, is the 7th on the list, Açú-Canaã. These seeds came from a tree that was graft from one of the original Açú-Canaã trees from the Otto Anderson orchard. This is a medium size tree, reaching 6-10 meters in height in its native range in Brazil. This cultivar was found near the town of Canaã (English: Cananan, as in from from the Bible) which is near Viçosa in the state of Minas Gerais in southeast Brazil. The tree has an upright growth habit with many branches forming a moderately populated crown. The lanceolate leaves are 8-14 cm. long, slightly glossy, with a pronounced central vein while lateral pinate veins are are barely visible. The globose fruit can measure over 3.5 cm with a pronounced crown, slightly glossy appearance, and bronze colored marks on the fruit are sometimes found. The fruit is similar to other Plinia coronatas which is sweet and excellent in flavor. This cultivar first offered for sale to collectors in the USA in late 2020. This is really the first time this species has been offered to collectors in the USA as seeds at such a low price. We are happy and proud to offer this species, and spread its genetics.
