These are commonly used in conjunction with 6" Recessed trims to cover drywall gaps between the recessed can and drywall. Commonly referred to as Goof Rings due to being used to cover where imperfect hole measurements were made when recessed cans were installed typically in older applications where a recessed can cutout tool was not readily available.
